Nutritional information

Description

A vitamin D blood test is an important tool for doctors and people in general to determine if vitamin D deficiency is present.
Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by inadequate sun exposure, malabsorption, accelerated catalyst from certain medications, and, in newborns, minimal vitamin D content in breast milk. Why is it important to take the test? Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to:

  • Osteoporosis, osteomalacia (other bone diseases).
  • Weak immune system, colds, flu.
  • Coronary heart disease, hypertension.
  • Alzheimer’s, depression.
  • Several types of cancer.

What is analyzed?

Vitamin D can be measured in the blood in two forms, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)(2)D].
The most common form in the blood is 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is the inactive precursor of the active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Normally, to know and monitor a person’s vitamin D status, 25-OH-Vitamin D is measured because it has a higher concentration in the blood and a longer half-life.
From a blood sample, vitamin D levels in its inactive form (25-hydroxyvitamin D) are determined at a cut-off concentration of 30 ng/ml.
This test is designed for qualitative detection of vitamin D and can be used for immediate diagnosis.
Results in 10 minutes without the need to refer you to a laboratory.
