Additional information
What is resveratrol and what does it have to do with the French paradox?
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol belonging to the stilbene family usually found in the skin of red grapes, in wine, and in some berries. The vid plant (Vitis vinifera) produces resveratrol. It is also found in the Polygonum Cuspidatum that grows in Asia, whose roots contain higher percentages of Resveratrol.
Resveratrol’s fame stems from the “French paradox” which is a term used to describe the observation that even though the traditional French diet is high in saturated fat, the French have a low incidence of cardiovascular disease compared to other countries with similar diets. It has been speculated that this could be due to other components present in the French diet, such as red wine and resveratrol.
