Today, in this post, we want to comment on a very interesting change in one of our star products and we will take the opportunity to refresh some of its properties.
First of all, tell you that our already well-known DAOSIN until now was presented in capsules and from now on, the new format will be in tablets or tablets.
Another change that we want to highlight is that the sizes of 90 and 20 capsules, from now on will be replaced by those of 90 and 15 tablets respectively.
Here we will explain the differences and benefits of these changes.

Let’s start from the beginning

Anyone who takes supplements knows that tablets and capsules are the most common methods of consumption due to the ease of storage and convenience of oral administration.
While both are similar, they have key differences that set them apart.
These characteristics will affect the way in which the laboratory decides to supply the active ingredients and the formulation of the food supplement.

What are capsules?

Capsules are soluble shells that are usually made from gelatin or other plant-based or vegan materials.
These coatings, usually oblong in shape, contain the active ingredients and are a convenient way to mask unwanted flavors or textures, especially for concentrated extracts.
There are two different types of capsules on the market, hard and soft.
Hard capsules are two-piece structures that seal and preserve the contents inside.
These are usually used for solid compounds, such as powdered ingredients or granules.
Soft-shell capsules, or soft gels, are made up of a single piece that is resistant to moisture and are hermetically sealed.
Unlike hard capsules, they do not have seams, which makes them perfect for containing liquids.

What are tablets?

The tablets are made by compressing the active ingredients that come in powder form and are compressed by combining them with a binding agent that will hold everything together.
To do this, three techniques can be used:

  • Direct compression.
    It is the most common and simple way of elaboration.
    During this process, the ingredients are mixed until compaction is achieved without adding binders.
  • Dry granulation.
    This is the name given to the mixture of ingredients and their subsequent compaction.
    It is used when the active ingredients in powder form are too fine and cannot be joined by the previous method to achieve a perfect tablet.
  • Wet granulation.
    In this third technique, the ingredients are mixed with a binding agent such as water.
    Then, they are compacted until a tablet is obtained.
    Again, the method is used with ingredients that don’t flow well or are too fine to use the first method.

Depending on the type of active ingredient, the tablets may also be coated for color or delayed release, causing them to be absorbed in the small intestine or other parts of the gastrointestinal tract instead of the stomach.
The tablets can be round or take various shapes.
Tablets usually have a line or two lines in the middle, making it easy to cut the dose in half or quarters.

Capsules

There are several factors to consider when choosing the right presentation – in this case the tablets – for which it is essential to evaluate several factors to ensure the right choice.
Some of the key aspects to consider include:

  • Properties of the active substance and formulation requirements.
    This involves evaluating the physicochemical properties of its ingredients, such as solubility, stability, and particle size.
    This helps determine which dosage form can best suit the characteristics of the product and improve its performance.
  • Target consumer population.
    Here, the preferences and needs of the target audience are usually considered.
    For example, tablets might be better suited for patients who require precise dose adjustments.
  • Regulatory requirements.
    As DAOSIN is a product for international sale – this is particularly produced in Austria – some countries to which it is exported may have specific guidelines or preferences for certain dosage forms, which definitely affects the final format.

What benefits do tablets provide over capsules?

Ease of swallowing

The first factor to consider when presenting a product is its ease of consumption.
As mentioned above, the tablets allow for better dosage adjustment and better size management.

Duration and storage

As for shelf life, tablets generally last longer than capsules because they are more stable thanks to the additional inactive ingredients.
The outer layer of the capsules can be sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, which means a shorter shelf life.

Size and dosage

Tablets are more versatile in terms of size.
You can choose a variety of smaller and higher doses because all you need to do is compress them according to your needs.
The tablets can also be split in half or quartered, making it easier for consumers to determine their dosage.
The capsules have a limited variety of sizes, so you’ll need to make do with the dosage available from the manufacturers.

Let’s remember a little more about DAOSIN

As we have already mentioned in a previous article (to read it click here) the deficiency of the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO) can modify our lives, especially in the social sphere.
Histamine intolerance is a multifaceted clinical condition triggered by foods rich in histamine and alcohol and/or by drugs that release histamine or block DAO, the main enzyme involved in the metabolism of ingested histamine.
The new DAOSIN presentation now comes in tablet or tablet format.
Recall that the intake of DAO through DAOSIN helps to increase the breakdown of food histamine in the intestine.
DAOSIN’s DAO complements the body’s own enzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing histamine.
The suggestion is to take one tablet before each meal, which increases the amount of this enzyme in the small intestine and, therefore, the ability to degrade histamine.
This accelerates its metabolism in the digestive tract and reduces its concentration, in order to avoid symptoms.
It is also worth remembering thathistamine is an essential molecule that belongs to the so-called group of biogenic amines and is naturally present in many foods, as well as inside our cells.
Normally, the intake of histamine contained in food does not cause any problems, as it is quickly processed and metabolized by the DAO enzyme that is mainly found in the intestinal epithelium. Ingestion of foods rich in histamine or alcohol can cause heterogeneous symptoms and signs such as diarrhea, headache, rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, hypotension, arrhythmia, hives, pruritus, and generalized redness. Histamine has many physiological and pathophysiological functions, including regulating blood circulation, contracting and relaxing smooth muscles and blood vessels, secreting stomach acid, allergic processes, and inflammatory responses as part of immune defense against external pathogens.
Histamine also helps heal tissues and acts as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system.

Conclusion

In patients with symptoms triggered by histamine-rich foods, a simple intervention in serum diamine oxidase activity through external DAO supplementation may help improve quality of life compared to a restrictive histamine-limiting diet.
